You just end up tarnishing the already tarnished image while the wrong is still there. All other countries have their problems but they don't bring it to the media and would attack whoever does, that is why in his third paragraph he approved the fact that when you visit some countries (but the truth is all countries, he just picked those he is biased about) you get surprised from what you see in news (because it's different) but in Nigeria what you see in the news is what you get cos we always wash our 'dirty linens' in public.

Yeah! I am a Nigerian, living as an expatriate in some other country/region, and also in same oil and gas sector as he, and have been privileged to visit/live in a reasonable number of countries. The so called leaders of tomorrow ie the youth are more corrupt than there parents, they bribe, cheat and sleep with lecturers through school. During election only the contestant that dashed the community the bags of rice and 1000 naira note each can win. Everybody is corrupt in this country, its sickening. I cannot disagree with ANYTHING he...Tim is SPOT ON. I cannot disagree with ANYTHING he said. And yes, I am Nigerian, working in the same industry as he is.

I cannot understand what it is about us but we seem to carry this behaviour everywhere we go, it's such a shame.

As one (seemingly mundane but in my opinion perfectly applicable) example, a Nigerian friend of mine came from Lagos to Aberdeen to visit and we went to the cinema. Right there in the middle of the movie, his phone started to give loud message alerts, yes the ubiquitous BBM messaging. I of course assumed he would hurriedly and apologetically switch his alerts to "silent" but no such luck; he went on a full chatting spree with continous loud pinging sounds. Trying to get him to stop was an effort in futility. The poor oyibos around us were in shock and just grumbled and moved seats; luckily it was a half full screening.

After the movie, I asked why he behaved like that. He said "what, we all do it in Nigerian, abeg get over it". Why though? WHY???!!!???!!!
What would it have cost him to be considerate to the next person? Why is the average Nigerian's default position to "chance" others?

It's matters like my cited example, along with many more I can't share for lack of time, that make me wonder if our generation is even ready to make the difference we so often demand.

We are a generation of social network activism with hardly a believable desire to effect real and lasting change.

I seek to move back home in the very near futur. Along with my suits and high heels, I'm packing my high hopes and dreams with me, I'm intent on retaining my core values. However I'm more than likely to face the same frustrations faced by Tim; and I am ready. Or am I?
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06409193129494888343noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-573074563072673741.post-61650346681853395032013-08-22T23:13:00.148+01:002013-08-22T23:13:00.148+01:00Its really sad the state of things in our country....Its really sad the state of things in our country.I wish I had met him....

A few years ago I made up my mind to be different from the average Nigerian: arrive at meetings on time (Nigerian time doesn't exist to me), treat everyone I meet with respect regardless of how they look, leave places better than how I met them, obeying rules and the laws of the land etc... I must say it can be quite frustrating as everyone thinks you are playing the fool. I refuse to be discouraged because I know I am on the right path. Our country will not always be this way, it may take sometime but I believe there will be a turn around!

Ka Chineke mezie okwu (In Zebrudaya's words)Sisiekonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-573074563072673741.post-16818455566202018482013-08-22T23:04:47.175+01:002013-08-22T23:04:47.175+01:00Thank you so much for sharing this, Daks. This part:

"Societal pressure plays an
enormous role in shaping the
behaviour of a population, probably
more so than the brute force of the
law, and whilst all Nigerians
complain about the crime and
dishonesty so prevalent in their
country (it affects them far more
than the expats), they remain
utterly silent when a perpetrator is
identified from within their peer
group."

reinforces my belief that we as individuals hold the key to changing our Country simply by changing the way we think and the way we condone moral decay. I'm also glad the writer was able to find a few honest Nigerians, it gives me hope. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
