Repost From Daks In The City: Sights - Sipopo Island

I haven't done a lot of exploring since I've been in Equatorial Guinea, mainly because I work 6 days a week and the most I can manage is hookah and drinks on weekends. This long weekend though, I decided to remedy that by going to Sipopo with friends.

Sipopo is in the Northeast of Bioko Island, about 20 minutes outside Malabo and is the most exclusive area in the country. Its where the new luxury shopping mall is being built, the estate where the houses for all the African Heads of State is situated and also the location of the Sofitel Sipopo Golf Hotel, the most luxurious hotel in EG.

The island is across the private beach from the Sofitel Sipopo. The hotel does this deal where every Sunday, for 35.000XFA you can get brunch and have full use of the hotel for the entire day; pool, beach and also visit the island. So my friends and I decided to make a day of it.

The hotel and its scenery are absolutely gorgeous, definitely lived up to the hype.

Made some new friends

Oh yeah, one thing...the island is teeming with insects and all sorts of prehistoric type flying things. They claim they're birds, I call 'em things, because I could not identify a single one. So everybody has to be completely covered up or you'll get bitten to pieces. A friend of mine had malaria that lasted for 2 weeks the last time he went. We piled on the mosquito repellent, wrapped scarves over every inch of exposed skin, wore long sleeves etc. We were sweltering but what is an hour or so of extreme heat compared to wo weeks of malaria. Not ben negotiable. So yeah, that's why I'm wearing a scarf in the previous picture.

After exploring we went to brunch

After brunch my friends went to go swim in the ocean, but as a superstitious Nigerian, who had also spoken to her mother that morning and had been soundly warned to not go near the water, I respected myself and hung out with a glass of wine and a book.

Equatorial Guinea boasts of some of the most beautiful scenery and natural sites in Africa, can't wait to visit all of them.

Love and Light xx
