I've gotten a few requests asking to do a post on what I wear to work, I don't have time to take proper photos but I do have time for selfies :)

Work Chic - The LBD & The statement Jacket

An oldie but a goodie.

I've had this post in my drafts for a few weeks not but completely forgot about it. This was when I still had my big hair, I really miss this hair, definitely have to get it done again.

Anyhoo this black dress is one of my favourites, if my colleagues only knew how many times I've rocked this dress with a different jacket, shirt, belt, brooch......the dress def has super re-rocking powers.

Work Chic: Day To Night

This post has been in my drafts since last year, forgot I had it even. 

At least 90% of my work week I don't go home right away, the traffic is nuts and I prefer to drive home much later when traffic has died down so I can be home in 20 minutes as opposed to the 3 hours it would take me if I left at 5pm.

As a result of this a lot of my work wear has to be able to translate easily from day to night in the event there's somewhere I'd like to go after work. What I discovered is that blazers are a godsend, they can turn a ho into a housewife faster than you can say church. Put a blazer over anything and you're good.

I am so enamored with this particular blazer above that I have it in navy and red besides the black one pictured here.

Whip off my blazer and I have a nice dress I can go out to dinner or wherever else that suits my fancy in.




I did just that below when I went out to Likwid with friends for a charity event after work.

So yeah, invest in blazers, they'll save your sartorial life.

OOTD - Black Swan

It honestly wasn't my intention to channel a gothic ballerina of some sorts, was stumped for what to wear to work on Monday and as black is always a safe option I went for it. Plus I love updo's and whenever I have my natural hair out I like to show off le visage without the acres of weave usually hanging around it.

A very convenient and infrequent breeze blew just then and as a result of my having no stamina I sort of moved with the wind and stumbled into fierce territory.

Lol.

I've had this skirt since 2008 and I remember when I first got it, I was visiting my friend Nneka in NY and after every day of shopping I'd come home to Harlem and show off my purchases and I rememeber her going "you're never going to wear that".

Well boo to you Nekky baby, I'm still rocking it 4 years later, best $60 I ever spent.

Work Chic - Dots On Dots

Wore this to work last week.

Had to take a picture with my girl Archie who showed up to work in polka dots too.

 


After work that day I had a very special meeting with catwalk coach extraordinaire, Jide Adedeji.

 

Why did I go see a catwalk coach you ask?

Well.....

I have a bit of a shameful secret, I cannot walk properly in heels.

There I said it *whew*

No jokes, anything higher than 3 inches and I'm teetering around like a newborn calf, its a mess. It was probably caused by the fact that I didn't wear heels for years and when I decided it was time to join this brave new world, them heels weren't having it.

See yeah, I used to be short, like proper tiny and then the year I turned 13 or 14, I can't really remember, I grew like 6 inches in a few months. It was the weirdest thing ever, my body became a stranger almost overnight and because I grew so fast it took me a while to get accustomed to my newly elongated limbs and I was the most awkward teenager ever, constantly knocking things over because I forgot how long my arms and legs were.

Suffice to say, it was an absolute nightmare, everybody I knew was still "normal-sized" and I tried to hide my height by hunching, wearing flats and almost trying to disappear.

Anyhoo it took me a while to be happy with my height and by the time I realized it was fabulous and wanted to wear high heels to appear even taller it was too late, I was unable to walk properly because I was so used to wearing flats.

This week I decided to take matters into my own hands and contacted Jide who is an ace catwalk coach and regularly teaches models how to stalk as if their lives depended on it.

My first lesson was on Tuesday and I left that class shamed at how much better a guy could walk in 6 inch heels than I could. Jide gave me a walk of life and I just stood there gaping. Now I am determined *in Kanu Nwankwo voice* (no shade) to work with him and practice until I can give them Naomi Campbell off.

Next time you see me you better clear because I might step on you (this is not a joke, I might literally step on someone, I'm 6 ft and I'll probably be wearing heels in the vicinity of 5 inches, there's no way I'd be able to see anyone below 5'7).

Work Chic: Graphic

Posts might be a bit uneven this week, I had a hell of a weekend and my week is similarly packed so I have loads of pictures to upload and subpar internet to do it with.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret, Primark does some alright shirts.

This summer when I was getting ready to move back I got caught up in the shopping for work frenzy and I made sure to get tons of separates. I actually prefer just being able to put on a dress and go as opposed to mixing and matching separates but the downside to a dress is that it is your entire outfit and the re-rocking has to be properly spaced. Whereas with a blouse, shirt, skirt or trousers you can re-rock them in totally different ways.

Since I was buying in bulk I hit up my old faithful ASOS and stocked up, then I happened to pass the Primark storefront in Westfield Stratford and I saw this black polka dot shirt with a studded collar that I wore in this post. I didn't even know when my steps re-directed themselves from the Victoria Secret I was heading to into Primark. I checked out their shirts and they weren't bad at all.

My problem with buying cheap chic is usually the longevity and the tailoring, I love a bargain but I also want to rock something that won't shrink at the first sight of a washing machine or have random threads hanging or just look generally...well...cheap.

We all know Primark has disgraced many a girl in that aspect.

I think the last time I even went in there was to get a hair doughnut which they sold for 1 pound as opposed to Boots which sold theirs for 4 pounds. Trust Primark, the hair doughnut somehow managed to separate itself from its moorings and I thought if they can't even make a good hair doughnut how can you put your sartorial fate in the hands of a store even lower on the fast fashion totem pole than Wet Seal or Charlotte Russe.

I decided to risk it and buy a bunch of blouses and I can say so far I am suitably impressed, apart from a loose button which I sewed back on they've held up remarkably well and they also look really good.

So yeah step away from your comfort zone sometimes (in my case Zara), you never know, you may be pleasantly surprised.
