Gifts: Important For Keeping The Romance Alive?

Christmas is fast approaching, and one of the most difficult hurdles the holiday season brings is what to buy that special someone. If you’re stuck for Christmas ideas, try not to panic just yet - after all, how important is a successful Christmas gift to a relationship? Leading online retailer isme.com recently conducted a survey of 135 UK-based women to find out.

When it comes to choosing what to buy for the woman in your life, jewellery topped the polls for the ideal romantic gift: almost two-fifths of the women questioned said that jewellery would be their ideal present from a partner. Of course, this may sound simple enough in theory, but choosing jewellery for someone else can sometimes turn out to be a nigh impossible task, and it’s all too easy to pick the wrong thing.

If you do go for jewellery and aren't entirely sure if you’ve got it right, don’t worry too much, as it seems it’s definitely the thought that counts. More than 8 in 10 women said that at some point in the past they had lied and pretended to like a gift they really hated. So, for the majority of women, keeping their partner happy is ultimately more important than receiving the ideal present.

Also reassuring is the fact that over half of the women surveyed said that gifts were only ‘quite important’ to them, although they admitted that they would be upset if they received nothing whatsoever. Plus, only 2 in 10
women described gifts as 'very important' to the success of a relationship - another reassuring statistic for those for whom gift-buying is not a forte.

It should be noted that Christmas presents don’t necessarily have to break the bank, either. The majority of women put their budget somewhere between £20 and £100. However, just over 1 in 10 were big spenders, claiming they would pay over £250 for a pressie for their partner. At the other end of the spectrum, less than 1 in 5 said they would spend less than £20 on their significant other.

So, are gifts vitally important for keeping romance alive? This survey seems to indicate that we shouldn't worry too much about it - although most women do appreciate a well-chosen gift, for the majority it’s not a deal-breaker. True love can certainly survive the odd terrible present!...

  1. For me, its the thought pf buying me a gift that counts. I end up not really giving a hoot about the actual gift. Plus my husband seems to know the perfect gift...everytime
